Fit4Work: encourage healthy eating at work
More than a third of our ‘daily intake’ happens at work. Good reason to encourage healthy eating habits at work. A balanced, tasty diet gives you energy. Energy you need to do your work well.
Why is healthy eating important?
Healthy eating benefits both employees and employers, ensuring a fitter team, higher motivation, improved performance and less sickness absenteeism.
Employees consume over a third of what they eat each day at work. Healthy eating isn’t always easy.
- Half of Belgian employees do not drink enough water.
- 58% of Belgian employees have a BMI that is too high.
The workplace is therefore an important setting for encouraging healthy habits.
How do you tackle healthy eating at work?
Changing eating habits? It won’t happen overnight. Use Fit4Work to design a well-thought-out nutrition policy (EAT) for the greatest health impact:
- Gain insight into your range of nutrition services. First, identify your organisation’s current services.
- Draw up an action plan. Create a plan with measures that make it easy to make healthier choices.
- Take action. Put healthy choices into practice. Organise healthy activities that fit your organisation’s DNA.
- Make healthy eating part of your health policy. Create circumstances to make behavioural change achievable. For example, provide a fruit bowl instead of a vending machine full of unhealthy snacks.

Which choices will encourage your employees to eat more healthily?
What can you start doing yourself as an employer?
Your employees are responsible for which foods they eat and how. However, as an employer, you can have a positive impact on their eating and drinking habits:
- Provide a balanced selection of foods and drinks. Use the food pyramid as inspiration.
- Encourage your employees to make healthier choices. For example, they could ‘replace one little thing’ and have water instead of a soft drink. Or a healthier snack.
- Don’t serve alcohol during work lunches and provide non-alcoholic options at parties. Fruity mocktails can be very cheerful.
- Use fun initiatives to stimulate lasting, healthy habits.
