Safe handling of chemical products and hazardous substances
Chemicals and hazardous substances can pose serious risks to the health and safety of your employees. The right approach not only protects your employees, but also creates a safe and healthy working environment.
What are chemical products and hazardous substances?
Chemicals and hazardous substances are chemical mixtures or substances that pose health and safety risks to employees. Such substances may contain toxic, irritating, corrosive, allergenic, carcinogenic, endocrine disrupting, mutagenic or reprotoxic agents. They can also be flammable or explosive.
What are your obligations regarding chemical products and hazardous substances as an employer?
Employers must comply with various laws, such as the Belgian Codex on Wellbeing at Work, Europe’s REACH and CLP regulations, and ADR for the transport of dangerous goods. Some of your responsibilities:
- Maintaining an up-to-date inventory of chemical agents
- Carrying out risk assessments and implementing preventive measures
- Searching for less hazardous alternatives
- Providing appropriate protective equipment and ensuring clear labelling
- Providing employees with proper and regular training
How can you protect your employees from chemical hazards?
Efficient and safe handling of chemicals involves three essential steps:
- Identification: create a complete inventory of all chemicals at your organisation.
- Observation: Have IDEWE assess your compliance with legal regulations.
- Analysis: Implement additional measures as needed, such as air quality monitoring and exposure assessments.
Additionally:
- Promote the use of personal protection equipment such as face masks and safety goggles.
- Raise awareness and provide training for employees on an ongoing basis.
